I thought I'd get a little more personal this St Patricks Day and Share some information with you. I like millions of people around the world am part Irish. It comes from my Dads side of the family and I thought I'd research a little bit about what it is we are actually celebrating on St Patricks Day. By the Way although St Paddys day falls on the 17 March every year this year it has been moved to the 14th of March to not conflict with the 2nd day in Holy Week. (The 16th is Palm Sunday) Just to confuse you though the parades, such as the 2008 New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade, seem to still be on the 17th of March Still. So I went and looked and well lots of comments about the 14th being the official day but the Events and Parades are carrying on as always.
So What is St Patricks Day ?
Its in fact the celebration of the Day that Saint Patrick - A Patron Saint of Eire (Ireland) died. Its an annual feast - a bit like a happy wake party where the people say lets celebrate the guys life rather than morn it. Outsiders kind of think that its an excuse for the Irish and Everyone who wants to be Irish to have a big dress up and piss up. They're probably not far wrong. So we all get in our green gear, with our Leprechaun shirts and Leprechaun hats sporting Shamrocks drinking loads of beer (Guinness, Murphys etc) and eating Green Irish Stew and other delicacies. Although the Dublin St. Patricks day event is big bringing together some 500 000 people its the New York one that attracts the biggest crowd to its parade. Some 2 million plus people watch the Parade going past. At times even rivers are dyed green to show allegiance.
There are Irish communities all over the world so its common to see Irish-American, Irish-German, Irish-Australians, Irish-Canadians and even Irish-Mexican Parades and festivals. Basically if there is an Irish pub in your city there is going to be some kind of celebration going on. Being "Irish for a day" to celebrate St. Patrick's Day is highly acceptable and a sure sign of the generousity of the Irish to invite in the world and its Irish wolfhound (dog for the layman).
I personally had my first St Patricks day party in Cape Town South Africa with a friend who runs an Irish Rugby club there. It was a blast.
